Letter from the Editor: The Dog Days of Summer

Summer is my favorite time of year. I never complain about the heat, and I enjoy meeting the visitors who come to enjoy the spectacular beauty of our area. While on my morning beach run or walk, I see many of the same people, who, like me, love the peace and beauty of the dawn. And, as much as we all enjoy our time near the ocean, not one of us enjoys it like the dogs. There are dozens of them there every day, running and playing in the surf, full of the joy of living. It never fails to lift my spirits. I can’t imagine a life without animals around me.

This month’s “Southern Snaps” introduces volunteers from two local organizations that work to help homeless cats and dogs. There are many other animal rescue organizations in our community, giving countless hours to save lives. Their difficult job is often rewarded only with a lick or a purr. But, for them, that’s enough.

Dogs never lie about love.
