Meet Nancy Jarrett

Nancy Jarrett loves order – in her work as the C.P.A. for Waccamaw Community Foundation, and at home where any nice day may find her outside on her riding lawn mower or edging her immaculate lawn – but not before she makes her bed and balances her checkbook to the penny! Warm and attractive, Nancy and her beloved husband, Joe, have lived in Myrtle Beach since 1980. Here they’ve raised their three children, all now adults, and have built a rich and satisfying life.

Nancy, I know your path to becoming an accountant was not traditional, please tell us about it.

I’m a native of Pennsylvania, and met Joe in college. We married two weeks after I graduated and began having children right away. We moved to Myrtle Beach, and I stayed at home with the children. I volunteered for everything from P.T.O. to Den Mother. But, after the children got to middle school I thought I would like to go back to work. Even though I had received a B.S. in Dental Hygiene, I had never practiced, but through the years I had helped my husband with the bookkeeping at his medical practice and loved it. Our neighbor, Gerry Boyle, is a Professor of Finance at C.C.U., and encouraged me to pursue an accounting degree. So, with his help and support, I went to Coastal and received my degree in 1992. I passed my C.P.A. exam that fall and went to work part-time for a local accounting firm until my last child graduated college. Then I retired, thinking I would have more time to travel and do things with my husband. But, he is still working, so several years ago the Waccamaw Community Foundation wanted an in-house accountant, and I took the job. I love my work and the people I work with – they do wonderful things for our community.

You’ve told me you’re a “doer” and don’t like being idle, so a part-time job is probably not enough for you.

I am a type-A person, that’s for sure. I am the only female on the Dunes Club Board of Directors; I serve on the Student Housing Foundation Board of Directors at Coastal, and I’m the treasurer of my church, Trinity Episcopal. I am a pretty good tennis player, and, as you mentioned, I love working in my yard. My riding lawn mower was an anniversary gift from Joe two years ago – and I was absolutely thrilled! Joe and I have been married for 35 years, and he knows me pretty well. He is a super husband.

We have six grandchildren that I adore and see as much as possible. Our daughter lives in Charlotte, N.C., and has a boy and a girl, one son lives in Charleston and has two girls, and our other son lives in Jacksonville, Fla., and has two boys.

My mother lives here, and we spend a lot of time together – she’s my best friend. Three days a week, we work out together. She has macular degeneration, but doesn’t let it stop her from doing anything. I think my perfectionist nature comes from my late father, who was good with his hands and loved order and balance. All of us love college sports and go to as many of Coastal’s games as we can. It’s a great life!
