The Postmistress
by Sarah Blake

When was the last time you wrote page after page of a letter to someone you love? What would happen if the postmistress failed to deliver the mail? These days, handwritten letters are a dying art form but during the World War II era they were the primary means of communication. Alternating between Franklin, Massachusetts, and war bombed London; Sarah Blake tells the beautiful story of three strong women who share their love, sorrow and losses. Iris James is the Postmistress of a small town at the end of Cape Cod who firmly believes it is her job to deliver the mail and keep people’s secrets, passing along the news they carry. Emma Fitch is the wife of the town doctor who left for the war to amend for a death he feels was his fault. “Radio Gal,” Frankie Baird, is a New York City girl, the first woman to report the war to those back home. Frankie believes if she can get it right, then Americans will understand the dangers at hand and will want to join in the fight.

Sarah Blake is a noted poet and her novel, The Postmistress, is so beautifully and tenderly written that it provides the reader with staggering emotional insight into the horror of war, yet journeys deeply into the hearts and minds of the characters. It is romantic and intimate, tragic and harrowing. I have never read a novel that describes the London bombings with such accuracy and passion.

A great book is one you crawl inside and never want to put aside; it leaves you thinking about it long after you’ve put it down. The Postmistress is one such book; insightful, compelling and unforgettable.
