Meet Megan O’Brien
By Leslie Moore
Make-up is fun. Even for the all-natural-lip-gloss-and-go among us, playing with something in a pretty package that smells and looks wonderful is a feminine delight like no other. Sasee sat down with Megan O’Brien, nationally known make-up artist, reviewer and blogger from www.megsmakeup.com, recently, and that, too, was fun.
Meg is beautiful, smart and savvy, and met me wearing a gorgeous red dress – of course her make-up was perfect. After we settled in, Meg had me try a liptini lip stain from the gift bag she brought – I loved it – and continued to give me tons of useful information throughout our visit. This woman is a walking encyclopedia of beauty products!
Meg, why did you start reviewing make-up and beauty products?
I live in L.A. and was working as an event planner when my then-husband bought me a very expensive moisturizer for my birthday. I had never used it and wanted to be sure it was right for me before I opened it. When I started looking online for reviews I couldn’t find much, and what I did find gave me no idea of the reviewer’s age or skin type. I ended up taking it back and buying a new pair of shoes!
Just for fun, I decided to start a blog about make-up. I sent product samples to women I knew all over the country, of various ages and ethnicities, and we posted our honest opinions about everything from drugstore to high-end cosmetics. About six months into this, I got a call from a reporter from the New York Times who wanted to interview me, and she said that everyone in her department was reading my reviews daily. After that article appeared, the website started to boom, and I was getting comments from all over the world.
Explain how women can earn Make-up Points to redeem for free make-up by joining and commenting on your site.
When you join megsmakeup.com, you’re asked a list of question, including your age and skin and hair type. You earn points when you comment on a product, add a picture to your profile, etc. The list is posted. When you earn at least 50 points, you can redeem them for a free gift and only pay the shipping.
I also do make-up parties around the country and invite the members in that area to come have fun with us – there are always great gift bags! I do these parties to celebrate my readers. In L.A., all events include gift bags; some of them are insane. One Oscar party I did included two million dollars worth of gifts!

Why do you think you’ve been so successful?
Well (laughing) I’m not afraid to call people and ask for what I want. I grew up in Boston, but I left home at 18 and moved to New York to become a model. Agency after agency told me I was not right. I finally told one agency that if they would sign me, I would get the jobs. And, I did. After I moved to L.A., I did temp jobs in what seemed like every office in the city. But, I met people and got the right phone numbers, and soon I was doing event planning. Since I started megsmakeup.com, I’ve attracted enough advertisers to be able to stop doing event planning. But, every advertiser has to sign a contact saying we will not give them any special treatment in our reviews. Our readers trust our opinions, and that is so important.
Meg brought a fabulous gift bag filled with some of her favorite products. For more of her wit and wisdom, visit www.megsmakeup.com.
