Secrets of Eden
by Chris Bohjalian
When you read a Chris Bohjalian novel, from the first chapter you anticipate amazing twists or a profound turn of events that will keep you intrigued throughout the book. There is no disappointment to be found in Bohjalian’s newest novel, Secrets of Eden. As in previous favorites, Midwives and The Double Bind, this author entices the reader with great suspense, fascinating characters and realistic, heart wrenching topics.
Who killed thirty-seven year old Alice Hayward the day she was baptized at the town pond? Each character narrates the events and circumstances that involve them in Alice’s life. From the single, charismatic pastor to the loving daughter; from the abusive husband to the famous author (who shared an almost identical tragedy), the reader is subtly drawn into the power of this story. Each with their own joys and miseries, the seen and unforeseen plot develops through these characters weaving doubt and intrigue.
Secrets of Eden is about secrets, can one truly be kept? It is also about love and faith and angels watching over us in our lives. The secrets within us want to be shared. Bohjalian’s secrets will captivate you to the very end.
