Letter from the Editor: Growing Together

Letter from the Editor

One of my dearest friends is getting married this month. Zenobia and I met years ago when we worked together, and I was instantly drawn to this beautiful, tall, dark-skinned woman who laughed more than anyone I’d ever met and always wore three inch heels even though she is already six feet tall. We were both married and raising our children, so we had a lot in common, and, strangely enough, tragedy hit both of us at nearly the same time. Zenobia’s only brother died and soon after I lost my husband. At the same time, her marriage disintegrated, and life became very difficult for my friend. Through the years, I’ve watched Zenobia struggle with chronic illness while supporting herself and her daughter working as an artist. She took all of her pain and sadness and put it into her work, gaining recognition throughout the southeast for her Women of Character dolls. Last fall, my friend, who also works tirelessly in the community, volunteering hours of her time weekly, met a man. This man, Jerry, quickly fell in love with my beautiful friend, but it took Zenobia much longer to let down her guard. She had not dated at all while her daughter was growing up, putting all of her energy into her work and her child, and her trust in love was near zero. When Zenobia finally admitted that she, too, was in love, an April wedding was planned. The power of love has given my friend all that I could have ever wished for her. Now, when I see her, she even walks differently, her happiness almost a physical thing. Being around Zenobia and Jerry makes me happy, and confirms my belief in the power of love to change absolutely everything.

To my beautiful friend Zenobia: I wish you years of happiness and the peace that comes from being in the right place, with the right person, at the right time. Your love brings me joy, and for that, I thank you.

In dreams and in love there are no impossibilities.
