Living Miracle: Lewis Waldrep

What about you would surprise people?

Although I’m a sports enthusiast, people are surprised when I tell them that I won the Ford Punt, Pass and Kick contest when I was in the 5th grade…and still have the sponsoring NFL Washington Redskins team jacket to prove it!

In this “Season of Miracles,” please tell us about a personal miracle in your life.

One year ago I suffered a stroke that resulted in me spending six days in Neuro-ICU at MUSC. Since that time, my priorities in life have taken a major shift, and I avoid stress at all costs. Even though I’ve recovered, I now make sure I get enough rest – I go to bed at 9 pm! Patti Marks, who works with me in the pharmacy, really went the extra mile helping me while I was recovering.

If you celebrate Christmas, Who puts up the tree?

That would be my wife, Mary Alice, who loves to decorate our Christmas tree with the many ornaments we have collected over the years. The story behind each ornament has a true meaning that signifies the spirit of Christmas, the birth of Christ, the love of family and the enjoyment of our many friends.

What is your favorite holiday activity?

Mary Alice and I enjoy going with friends to Brookgreen Gardens” Nights of a Thousand Candles! The combination of beautiful music, hand bells ringing and carolers singing, candles and lighting displays, crisp air and enthusiasm is exhilarating and sets the tone of the season. This is my third year in business in the area, and we’ve been to Nights of a Thousand Candles twice – we are looking forward to this year!
