How to Choose Your Engagement Ring

By Christopher Cervini

First and most importantly, find a jeweler you can trust. When you sit down in person with an expert gemologist, you can look at numerous diamonds that are outstanding on paper, but there will be one that speaks to you because of its visual beauty, not its technical aspects.  An expert will educate you on the credentials of a particular diamond and teach you why one is nicer than the other – even within the same grades there will be subtle differences that only a gemologist can see and explain. A relationship with a jeweler is confidential and very personal – I encourage all young couples to develop a relationship with a professional jeweler. My customers become my friends, and they come back to me for birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. I know their children and families, and they know mine.  A family store is where you will get that connection; one that lasts a lifetime.

When a gentleman has found the lady he wants to spend the rest of his life with, it is his most important emotional connection. He needs to first understand his fiancée, and do some personal recognizance to understand her tastes – does she like traditional, contemporary, unusual or unorthodox?

Personally, I usually recommend something that is timeless, even if there are upgrades along the way. You want a ring that is going to be appealing for a lifetime.

The next decision is the shape of the center stone. Does she like round, pear, oval or cushion? Round, oval or cushion cut are the most popular shapes now.

I don’t fall back on the formula many use in determining the budget for the ring. What I truly like to do is get to know the gentleman and find out what he’s comfortable spending. Then I take his money as far as it can go – it is important to be a good steward of his money and give him the very best value. I’m also an advocate for staying within your means as opposed to pushing the limit and putting yourself in a bind.
