Nicole Says… Read This Book by Carole Bellacera

By Nicole McManus

Facebook has a way of connecting people with their friends from the past; however, Cindy Sweet never expected to hear from Ryan Quinlan. Ryan was a Warrant Officer in the Vietnam War, and the man she loved with all of her heart. When his chopper was taken down and there were no survivors, Cindy found the strength to continue serving as a combat nurse. When she returned home, she moved on with her life, and now forty years later, everything has been turned upside down. How can Ryan be alive?

Carole Bellacera blends medical drama, young innocence, and places them in the midst of war. It is obvious the author uses her own service background, as this book is written with honesty. Even the tiniest of things that Cindy went through, from the moment she stepped off the plane, will feel very real to the readers, thanks to the incredible details. The author not only captures the spirit of the times, but also the emotional turmoil of everyone involved. The never-ending fear, the panic and worry, as well as the grief, are powerful things to deal with, while trying to find a way to overcome and move forward each day. Carole Bellacera has written a book that will live in people’s hearts forever.

As you may know, I love historical fiction novels. You can learn about the past, while enjoying a great story. I have escaped into numerous time periods and places, however this was the first novel that I have read set during the Vietnam War. Growing up, Mom and I used to watch China Beach, so it was only natural for me to be intrigued by this book’s synopsis. I enjoyed how the author transitioned modern day into the past, through the main character’s memories. Carole Bellacera is a South Carolina author who is now on my radar, and I will be reading her other books in the future!
