Nicole Says… Read This Book by Lauren K. Denton

By Nicole McManus

Sara Jenkins lives a lovely life in New Orleans. She owns a thriving antique shop, and her home is clutter-free. She prefers it when things in life are routine and normal… unlike her childhood. Growing up in The Hideaway with her eccentric grandmother allowed for numerous embarrassing moments. The Hideaway was once a beautiful, Victorian bed and breakfast, but it quickly became a permanent haven for a peculiar group of elderly people. When Sara learns her grandmother has passed away, she heads back home to Alabama, only to discover Mags left her in charge of The Hideaway. Following her grandmother’s final wishes, Sara uncovers a lifetime of secrets that explain just how Mags came to be. Will Sara be able to return to her New Orleans life, or will the inexplicable charm of The Hideaway cast its spell on her?

This book drips southern charisma right from the start. Lauren Denton has proven to be on the list of southern authors to watch with her debut novel. Told from alternating points-of-view, readers gain perspective on Mags’ life from the ‘60s through present day, while Sara comes to terms with the aspects of her grandmother’s life that were kept hidden. The lessons of learning to appreciate family and what truly makes a home are powerful messages for this time of year.

They say never judge a book by its cover, but that is an impossible feat. Some of my favorite books have been selected due to an intriguing cover. The serene front porch scene caught my eye, and then I saw recommendations from authors like, Karen White and Patti Callahan Henry. I am very glad this book called out to me. Even though this is not a holiday-themed book, it still is a vital story that stresses the importance of family. Family can be blood-related or made from friendships, but the connections last a lifetime. This sweet book proves that returning to one’s roots can open up secrets of the past and give us all insight into our present lives. I look forward to discovering more of Lauren K. Denton’s work.
