Letter from the Editor: The Melody of Life

Letter from the Editor: The Melody of Life

If we think of life as a melody, most of the time the tune is sweet, a song of happiness and blessings…but for all of us, a dirge is sure to play, a soundtrack for the tragedies we cannot control. I want to tell you about a beautiful girl, I’m going to call her Lovely, because she was indeed lovely and sweet and all things good. Lovely succumbed to a terrible disease a few days ago, leaving a loving family in shock, devastated by their great loss. Lovely and my son were good friends in middle and high school. I always knew she was around when I would hear the sounds of classic rock coming from my son’s room, especially Led Zeppelin, one of her favorites. Cavin was never a fan of that “old” music, but Lovely and I shared more than a few conversations about our favorite songs. My son graduated from high school, then college and moved to Europe to follow his dream. Lovely stayed in the area, and we mostly lost touch except for the occasional Facebook greeting or chance meeting. I would hear from others how she was doing, her ups and downs, and I kept her in my thoughts and prayers. Over the past couple of years, the news about Lovely was much more positive. Through hard work and the support of her family, she was doing well, and it appeared that Lovely was going to overcome and create the bright future we all knew she deserved. But, Lovely stumbled, and addiction took her life.

I wish I had a solution for the horrors of addiction; a way to ease the pain of families, like Lovely’s, who tried their very hardest to keep the worst from happening. But I don’t. Maybe if we all just love each other a little more, suspend our judgments and blame, and take a moment to really see how we are all connected, it would help. I’m not sure, but I do intend to try. I leave you with a verse from a song I will always associate with Lovely. Rock on beautiful girl. I’ll see you again one day.

And if you listen very hard

The tune will come to you at last

When all are one and one is all…

Led Zeppelin, “Stairway to Heaven”

The music is not in the notes, but in the silence between.
