When you don’t feel well – joints, muscles or bones ache – the last thing you want to do is go from doctor to doctor replaying your symptoms over and over to people unfamiliar with your case. And, you don’t want to be trying to keep track of your medical records and/or test results. Well now, Grand Strand residents don’t have to.

McLeod, one of the top names in medicine in our region, has brought us Human Motion Specialists. It’s a team that offers something nobody else has – a continuum of care – that ensures consistent treatment from one physician to the next. And, this total program of care is in nearby Florence, just about an hour away.

What a team they have assembled: McLeod Orthopaedics, McLeod Orthopaedics Seacoast, McLeod Family/Sports Medicine Center, McLeod Orthopaedics Dillon, Florence Orthopaedic Associates, Hand Surgery Associates, Pee Dee Orthopaedic Associates, Pee Dee Spine Center, Florence Neurosurgery & Spine, and Pee Dee Neurosurgical Services.

Keeping lines of communication open at McLeod Human Motion Specialists is Service Line Coordinator Don McLean. Don’s responsible for the day-to-day coordination between offices and ensures the best possible care of patients.

So, you might say that McLeod Health has taken some of the pain out of the healthcare system. McLeod caregivers consider their commitment to service a calling. That’s more than evident to those who seek treatment at McLeod Human Motion Specialists.

Q: Dr. Guanciale, there seems to be so many plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery techniques emerging today. What are your recommendations to Sasee readers on the ones that are the least invasive with the best results?

A: If a patient is looking for the least invasive procedure producing the best results possible, I would suggest my new Sciton® laser system. Lasers have evolved over time. Traditionally, there had to be a different laser machine used for each treatment… until now.

Sciton®, the only company in the US that develops and produces medical lasers, has come up with a solution… multiple lasers in one machine used to address multiple cosmetic procedures such as varicose veins treatment, hair removal, wrinkle reduction, Roasacea reduction, skin tightening, scar removal, body contouring, age & sun spot removal, and more.

For patients who wish to turn back the time by reversing skin damage, softening wrinkles, and tightening the skin, resurfacing lasers are most effective. I use a Sciton® Contour™, the Sciton® SkinTyte™, and the Sciton® BBL™ laser system. The Contour™ is a laser that fires in a grid pattern to remove thin layers of your skin’s surface which is then replaced by younger skin growth. The Sciton® Contour™ has the ability to treat all types of skin tones from varying ethnicities which makes it unique to competing lasers. The SkinTyte™ offers a non-ablative approach to firmer, youthful skin by using broadband light energy to deeply heat dermal collagen which initiates the body’s natural creation of renewed collagen leading to increased skin firmness. The BBL™ uses broadband light to treat skin conditions associated with aging, active life-styles, and sun damage. Using the Sciton® system will result in rejuvenated, refreshed, younger looking skin, but without the prolonged pain and down-time that many other lasers produce.

When considering liposuction, using different types of energy sources like ultrasound and laser have been used in the past. But now, we use high pressure water to “liquefy” the fat. This allows the use of smaller instruments to remove the fat resulting in reduced down-time, incision sites, and therefore, scars. My office uses the Sciton® ProLipo™ laser body contouring system which combines high powered energy sources and two different types of laser beams. One wave treats the fat and the other treats the water in the tissues causing the skin to “shrink.” The ProLipo™ system is extremely effective for areas with excess fat and skin such as the neck, arms, abdomen, waist and thighs.

It is easy for patients to be enticed by the advertisements only, but it is important to do your research. Be sure to understand the benefits of a new procedure over the conventional approach. If your doctor is not trained to do a cosmetic procedure, such as liposuction, the conventional way and only offers the “latest technology,” you might want to reconsider your choice in service. Choose a surgeon trained in cosmetic or plastic surgery with experience in tried and true techniques before you become a “victim” of a new technique.

Dr. Ralph Cozart, of Dunes Cosmetic Surgery, Advises Patients to Avoid “Counterfeit Cosmetic Surgery”

Some people might spend more time researching a new appliance purchase than they do a surgical procedure or even their physician’s medical credentials. In South Carolina, there is no law restricting what types of procedures a licensed physician can do in his or her office. Physicians from non-surgical backgrounds are doing cosmetic procedures outside of their core training in the office setting. I call this “counterfeit cosmetic surgery.” Some physicians will attend a two or three day lecture course to learn how to perform liposuction or a breast augmentation procedure. Those types of training courses are not restricted to Plastic Surgeons. Any physician with a medical license, such as Family Practice, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine can go to those training courses and get basic verbal instruction on these procedures. It is much easier for these physicians to go to a weekend surgery training workshop than to complete a formal residency in Plastic Surgery.

How does a person choose a surgical specialist for a cosmetic procedure? Do your homework! Ask your physician if they have hospital privileges to perform the same procedures that they perform in their office. Ask if they are board-certified in Plastic Surgery and if they are maintaining their certification. Many people are not aware that there is no recognized board certification in Cosmetic Surgery. Anyone with a medical license can place out a shingle and call themselves a Cosmetic Surgeon. If they are not board-certified Plastic Surgeons, in what specialty are they board-certified? Is their board certification recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties? Is their office surgery center even accredited?

Plastic Surgeons have a unique level of training that encompasses cosmetic as well as reconstructive procedures. The minimum standard to become board-certified in Plastic Surgery is at least three years of a surgical prerequisite residency after medical school and at least two years of Plastic Surgery residency or fellowship. Most of us who have been in practice for at least 10 years have completed a full five-year General Surgery residency and at least a two-year Plastic Surgery residency. It is during that comprehensive plastic surgery residency that we learn the safe and effective techniques for cosmetic and reconstructive procedures through hands-on surgical instruction from board-certified Professors of Plastic Surgery. We continue to perfect our techniques through years of surgical experience. Plastic Surgeons also have to acquire continuing education yearly to maintain our board certification and membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. As many newer techniques become available, we have to attend postgraduate courses to become fully trained in these procedures. We will never stop learning. Was it worth all this training when it is not a state requirement? Absolutely! Patient safety demands it, and there is no substitute for appropriate training and experience. The lengthy and extensive training pays off daily through the smiles of happy patients. Cosmetic Surgery patients expect results!

If you have any questions, please call Dr. Ralph Cozart at Dunes Cosmetic Surgery at 843-497-7771. Dunes Cosmetic Surgery is located at 1021 Medical Circle, Ste. 230, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

When posed the task of writing about upcoming design trends or frugal tips for decorating your home, interior designer Dana Malinski owner of Currents Home Furnishings, fills with excitement. “This is a time the two are truly one in the same”, she says.

Currently organic, earthy elements are making a large impact. There is nothing less expensive or more striking in a space than beautiful found branches, gathered shells or stones placed in a special vase or vessel. She laughs, “wine corks with the date and the people you shared it with are one of my favorite displays I like to watch grow”.

Everyone is aware the economy has changed the way we think about almost everything these days. “We’re more careful, more selective in our decision making which is really a good thing. Just because you have the means to spend willy nilly, doesn’t mean you should! Interior design is based on strategic thinking, about your lifestyle, design sensibilities, function and budget. You can most definitely create a fantastic space on any budget. Also, good design should be timeless. Numerous changes throughout the years should not be necessary.

My most enjoyable, successful and gratifying jobs have been done using what the client already owns and then adding the important, usually less expensive “pops” at the end. It’s extremely important to know where you’ll get the most bang for your buck. Here are a few suggestions on how to do just that:

Understand – Understand that if you want to do this yourself, do. It can be done. On the other hand, if you decide to hire a professional, let them do what they are trained to do. The most important part of a designer’s job is listening to your needs, wants and desires for the finished product and developing a plan to incorporate those in a creative, clean way that may not have occurred to you. Understand that designing a room is a process. Transition can be difficult, but by this time you should have developed a trust in the person you’ve hired and be willing to wait for the complete reveal. If you follow these guidelines you will most likely be thrilled with your new space.

Know – Know that hiring a decorator for a couple of hours can save you money!

Paint – It may involve a little elbow grease, but it is inexpensive and provides an instant clean slate.

Curtains – Nothing fancy, just something to soften the hard edges. Place them atleast 12” above the window if possible. Try not to block incoming light.

Lighting – Okay, this one can be a little pricey, but it’s worth it! If cost is an issue, be sure to use accent lighting on bookshelves or over art. Don’t use overhead lighting unless you have to and it has a dimmer switch.

Furniture – Think outside the box! Reupholster, rearrange, add great pillows.

Accessorize – Less is really more! Get rid of the dust collectors, use only the things that are special, things that you love [ie. Coffee table books (not paperback), items from nature,(not bird poop), things gathered from your travels].

It really does not have to cost a lot to create a room you and your family will love for years to come.

Thinking of Redoing Your Family Room? Read This First!

Designer Pat Bates, of Rose Arbor Fabrics, Gives Insider Tips on Bringing the Family Closer Together.

In years past they were called hearth rooms and would usually be a sitting area off the kitchen, with a fireplace, where the family could gather while meals were prepared. Eight foot ceilings were typical and there might be a breakfast table and sometimes a bar with cabinets above that blocked the view from the cooking area to the sitting area, and therefore made conversation somewhat challenging.

The trend today is for homes to be built on a grander scale and for this area to be much more “family friendly” than before. The obstacles to the view, and the conversation, are removed by eliminating the cabinets above, or in the case of a much higher ceiling, just out of the line of sight. These rooms are informal and comfortable and seem to be successful in bringing families closer together.

The design trends for these areas are beginning to include heavy duty fabrics such as solution-dyed acrylics made for indoor or outdoor use, as well as leathers and microfibers which are great for high traffic pieces. Another idea that we use often is to slipcover the furniture in these areas, so that the fabric can be taken off and washed. Another trend in fabrics that we are seeing more often is “green” upholstery and fabrics. Many of the traditional fabric manufacturers are now offering options such as bamboo, which is a sustainable material and is now available in styles and colors that look and feel like the cottons, weaves and synthetics that have always been around.

Flooring in these family areas is likely to be tile, marble or wood and may be covered with somewhat worn antique oriental rugs, or nylon area rugs that are patterned, or bound with an interesting border. We still see many neutral grass and sisal rugs with borders that are patterned or plain.

Often we are required to work these rooms around huge flat screen televisions. There is usually a computer in this area, whether at a desk or cabinet built-in, or on a counter, for the game systems that are so popular with children and adults.

Carolyn Jenks, owner of Porch Parrot, helps you decide – What do You Want from Your Porch?

The idea of a porch is to not only to welcome the visitor but to provide a “this is my home” feeling. A beautifully decorated front porch is like a huge welcome sign. It is a preview of what’s inside and a window into the character of your home. A porch can be fun and quirky or formal and serene. It can be whimsical, cozy or a natural retreat. It can be a reader’s paradise or the neighborhood gathering place.

A key element in decorating a front porch is the doormat. Did you know that visitors will always look down at their feet before entering someone’s home! Use this to your advantage and purchase a new mat whenever one becomes worn or faded. A metal doormat may only need a good scrub and a fresh coat of paint to liven up the look. Rubber mats last forever!

Think of your back or screen porch as an outside room and you’ll be inspired to do some quick decorating. Just like any room, it should express who you are. If you enjoy the “bistro” look, you can select style elements to fit that theme, such as a market umbrella, bistro patio furniture or a chalkboard to display the daily menu. If you love modern decor, choose planters and doormats that represent the style. Make it a visual treat to set the mood before entering the sanctuary of your interior from the outside world.

An indoor – outdoor rug may be in order. If you already have furniture and it still feels like something is missing, this could be the element you need. Rugs are what will pull together an outdoor living space. Purchase rugs that will not mold or mildew and can be cleaned easily. And stay away from any rug that contains cotton as it will always mold or mildew.

Small porches can become cozy places to relax and entertain if the space remains a porch, be careful that it does not become just a storage unit for the “extras” you don’t want indoors.

When selecting porch furniture, remember the scale of furniture not just the style. You don’t want to purchase a large wicker chair set and find you have room for just one chair! Will a stand alone porch swing fit the bill? Maybe a small table, two chair set or garden bench for a small retreat. When planned right, your porch can truly become another living space where you can reside outside.

If you have a hodge-podge of furniture but would like a more unified look, consider spray painting everything one color. Use a high quality exterior paint and take the time to clean everything thoroughly before painting. You will be amazed at how quickly your porch starts to take on that decorator look, simply by coordinating your various pieces of furniture with one color.

Porch decor is what adds character. It includes door art, plants and stands, vases, candles, architectural elements like and wind chimes.

One word of caution is sure to avoid “clutter” when using decorative elements. Too much of anything makes a space feel off balanced and messy. It should remain comfortable and clean… visually appealing.

And by all means, don’t be afraid to add a little bit of yourself!
