The Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art is now accepting entries until March 16th for its poster design competition to advertise their 22nd annual event. The winning design will be used in promotional materials, including a poster and tee shirts that will be sold during the festival. The winning designer will take home $300.

Only original artwork submitted by the artist or artist’s representative will be accepted for this competition. Artists can submit two entries, but artwork must not have been previously exhibited in any Horry or Georgetown County or City program.

“This year, we decided to accept all graphic media forms. Artists can choose from paint, markers, photography, digital art, crayons, and chalk. We can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with to commemorate our 22nd annual festival,” said Delores Blount, Director of the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art.

A panel of arts professionals will make the final selection based on specifications, design and marketability. The winning image will be produced as the cover for the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art’s program books and will also be produced as the festival poster. The winning image, an original signed by the artist, will be auctioned at the 13th Annual Pawleys Island Wine Gala, with all proceeds going to the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art.

In addition to the $300 cash prize, the winning artist will receive two all access passes to the festival, 10 posters and national recognition via publicity surrounding the 22nd annual event.

Sasee is seeking handmade, crafted wreaths to be donated. We will be distributing to skilled nursing facilities to hang on resident’s doors for the holidays. The Social Garden will be offering FREE wreath making classes if using products from the store and will offer 10% off all materials. If you wish to bring in your own materials, the wreath making class is $20.00.

Be creative and design an imaginative, fun, or whimsical wreath that will brighten someone’s door for the holidays.The wreaths will be photographed and highlighted in the December issue of Sasee. Special awards will be given.

Sasee’s Dream Big Book Drive was a HUGE success. Ann Harris, founder of the Bright Blue Sea Bookshelf program is thrilled to have more books to give to children in need. Award-winning author and Sasee contributor, Ann Ipock, will be appearing at Sunset River Marketplace on May 5, from 10-11 am, as part of the gallery’s ongoing Coffee With the Authors series. She will talk about her latest book, “Life is Short, I Wish I Was Taller,” which follows “Life is Short, So Read This Fast!” and “Life is Short, But It’s Wide” and completes Ipock’s Life is Short trilogy.

8th grade student, Jessica Cox won the Myrtle Beach Barnes and Noble My Favorite Teacher writing contest this past Thursday, April 14, 2011. Students throughout Horry and Georgetown Counties nominated their favorite teacher through an essay, poem, or letter. Jessica’s poem, nominating Forestbrook Middle School teacher, Stephanie Necessary, was the store winner. Jessica’s poem will go on to compete at the regional level, where Jessica and Stephanie are eligible for a color nook, $500 gift card, $5,000 cash for the teacher, and $5,000 cash for Forestbrook Middle! Way to go, Jessica!

The Rotary Club of Myrtle Beach recently announced a third annual special benefit concert to be held on Saturday, February 26th. “An Evening of Hollywood Classic Songs” will feature the Long Bay Symphony and two nationally recognized performers in a concert of popular songs from the motion picture industry.

JODI BENSON is best known as the original voice of “The Little Mermaid”, and has been nominated for a Tony Award for her role in “Crazy For You”. She has also performed in numerous other Broadway shows, and with symphonies and orchestras all over the country.

DOUG LABRECQUE thrilled theatre audiences as The Phantom and Raoul in the Harold Prince Production of “Phantom of The Opera”. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, and was a featured performer in the 100th Birthday Anniversary of Oscar Hammerstein at the Gershwin Theatre in New York.

The concert will feature songs from Hollywood including Over The Rainbow, Singing in The Rain, The Rose, Top Hat White Tie and Tails, The Circle of Life and many others. Selections from popular Broadway Shows that have been turned into Motion Pictures will also be included, such as Phantom of The Opera, Guys and Dolls, and Chicago.

Members of the Carolina Master Chorale will also be featured in the concert.

Tickets are available through the Long Bay Symphony (843) 448-8379. Ticket prices are $35.00, $40.00, and $45.00. The concert will take place at the Myrtle Beach High School Performing Music and Arts Center on Robert Grissom Parkway in Myrtle Beach, SC.

All proceeds from the concert support local, national, and international charities through the Rotary Club of Myrtle Beach.
