My Dog Knew Before I Did

Thrive with Dr. Torri: Tips for a Healthier You | August 2025

There’s a saying that goes, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.” I used to think that was just a sweet quote you’d find on a decorative throw pillow. Then, one of my dogs proved just how true it was. It started subtly. My German Shepherd, Leonidas, wouldn’t leave my side. He followed me from room to room, rested his head on my lap during Zoom meetings, and gently nudged me all night long checking on me – something he never used to do. I brushed it off as cute canine clinginess; but, he was trying to tell me something. Something was off – my body knew it, he knew it – even if I didn’t.

Soon, the fatigue became hard to ignore. I chalked it up to being a busy mom, doctor, and business owner. But Leonidas’ intuition didn’t let up. His concern turned into gentle alertness: staring at me as if willing me to pay attention to myself. And finally, I did.

I ran multiple lab panels, not necessarily because I thought anything serious was wrong, but to rule things out. What I discovered surprised me: my body was waving a white flag long before I heard it.

Leonidas heard it.

As women, we’re quick to care for others: our children, our partners, even our pets, before ourselves. But, what if your dog is trying to tell you what you won’t admit? That you’re tired, overwhelmed, or running on empty?

Thankfully, lab testing can pick up the signals your body sends, often long before symptoms become a crisis. Whether it is fatigue, mood swings, weight changes, or sleep troubles, your body has a way of communicating. You just have to listen. And if you won’t, maybe your dog will.

So, this August, as we celebrate the pampered pooches who bring us endless joy, let’s also celebrate the wisdom they share. The next time your dog acts a little “off,” consider this: maybe they’re not the ones who need help. Maybe they’re trying to help you.

Stop by Any Lab Test Now and give your body the attention it deserves. Leonidas would insist on it.
