Fun in Fitness…But Is YourBody Keeping Up?

Thrive with Dr. Torri: Tips for a Healthier You | September 2025

Some women love collecting shoes. I’ve always been more of a leggings kind of girl. There’s just something about pulling on a colorful, well-fitting pair that makes me feel ready to take on anything, even if “anything” turns out to be walking the dogs around the neighborhood.

I’ve always believed that fitness should feel joyful. Dance classes, pickleball, beach yoga – I’m the first one to sign up. Here’s what often goes unspoken. You can love moving your body and still feel as if you’re carrying a backpack full of bricks.

Several years ago, I signed up for a sunrise bootcamp on the beach. It sounded dreamy. The salty air, the crashing waves, the idea of starting my day strong. Halfway through a round of burpees on the sand, though, I felt my heart racing, my vision blurring, and stars spinning in front of my eyes.

It turned out I wasn’t simply “out of shape.” My iron was low, and my electrolytes were completely off balance. My body was eager, but it simply couldn’t keep up.

That experience taught me an important lesson. Loving exercise is wonderful, but your body has to be ready to handle it.

If you’re feeling exhausted, short of breath, dizzy, or battling muscle cramps, it’s not always a sign that you’re slacking. Sometimes it’s your body’s quiet way of asking for help. Conditions like anemia, electrolyte imbalances, thyroid issues, or low vitamin levels can quietly drain your strength and your enthusiasm.

One of the most caring things you can do for yourself is to look beneath the surface. A few simple lab tests might uncover hidden issues and help you get back to feeling vibrant.

So keep wearing those leggings and chasing the activities that make your spirit light. But if your workouts leave you feeling defeated instead of energized, pay attention. Fitness should help you thrive, not leave you feeling worn out.
