You know the feeling. Your energy bottoms out, your head feels foggy, and you start questioning whether that handful of candy corn was really worth it.

Here is what is happening inside your body. When you eat a lot of sugar, your blood glucose levels rise quickly. Your body responds by releasing insulin to bring those levels back down. That swing in blood sugar can leave you feeling like you are on a ride you did not sign up for. While the quick hit of energy feels good at the time, repeated spikes and drops can strain your system. Over time, your body may become less sensitive to insulin, which is one of the first steps toward prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. This can happen to anyone, not just people who are overweight.

The problem is that you often do not notice it right away. Blood sugar issues are sneaky. They can build slowly over months or years before any symptoms show up. That is why it is smart to check your numbers once in a while. A simple blood glucose or hemoglobin A1C test is quick, painless, and tells you how well your body is managing sugar.

If you want to enjoy Halloween without the crash, a few small changes can make a big difference. Pair your sweets with something that slows down how fast your body absorbs the sugar, like a handful of nuts or a slice of cheese. Drink plenty of water to help your body process the extra carbs. And do not skip meals thinking you are “saving up” for candy. When you finally eat, your blood sugar will spike even harder.

Halloween is about having fun, and treats are part of that. Just be mindful. Balance out the sugar and keep your health in check so that the only scare you get this season comes from a haunted hayride and not your lab work.
