Got Style? Seven Easy and Realistic Ways to Find or Refine Your Look.

by Cécile Bischof

I’ve always loved people-watching — maybe because it’s practically a national pastime in France, where I grew up. I enjoy observing what makes someone stand out in a crowd, whether their style is bold or quietly understated. Ironically, when it came to my own wardrobe, I had to admit I’d been stuck in a style rut for far too long. It was time for a change. Enter a good friend of mine who truly knows her stuff. A former boutique owner turned Instagram style advisor, she’s passionate about helping women feel confident in their own skin by discovering a style that reflects who they really are. The tips I learned (and adopted) are both simple and effective. They can help refresh your current look, or even lead you to a brand-new one, faster than you might expect.

1. Get inspired

Are you bored with your style and looking for fresh ideas? Inspiration for clothes can truly be found anywhere. It might be an actress’s look in a movie, a magazine at the dentist’s office (snap a picture with your phone!), or even someone passing by on the street. If you like a look—or even just one element of it—all you have to do is make it your own. It will still be original and unique because nobody will wear it like you. If something catches your eye, go for it. If you like it, you’ll rock it!

2. Try something new

One major obstacle to updating my style was constantly defaulting to familiar, “safe” clothing. I wore the famous yoga pants for years, and I still have to fight the urge to reach for them too often (I’ve donated several pairs just to be safe!). Sure, they’re comfy, but there are so many other options out there that are just as comfortable and have more personality and style. I switched to flowy, colorful pants made of soft fabrics with fun designs that I stumbled upon online one day. I wear them on my most casual days and still feel stylish. So be open and make it a point to step outside your comfort zone—you never know how something will look until you try it on.

3. Think accessories

This is one of my favorite tricks because it delivers maximum impact with minimal effort. I wear earrings every day, but I save my most distinctive pairs—oversized, colorful, or made from unexpected materials—for when I want a simple outfit to feel intentional. I’ll often pair them with jeans and a basic top or neutral looks. Your own “statement piece” might be a bold bag, a silk scarf, or a great pair of sneakers. Whatever it is, one standout accessory can instantly elevate your look. It also takes the pressure off getting dressed, especially when you’re short on time or not in the mood to overthink it. Try it and get ready for the compliments.

4 – Mix it up.

The best styles are often a mix of different “vibes.” Amazing finds can come from anywhere. My now-curated wardrobe includes pieces from outdoor markets in Europe and local beach shops. I even own a gorgeous red dress from a Fourth of July Walmart clearance rack that I wore to an anniversary dinner; proof that style isn’t a matter of money, but of developing an eye for what looks good on you. Taking an eclectic approach is also a great way to create something unique and authentic.

5. Ask for feedback

This one was hard for me—and, from talking to other women, I know I’m not alone. Trusted friends and family often have a clearer sense of what truly suits you than you do yourself. Many of us can’t help being overly critical in the fitting room, spotting flaws that aren’t really there or clinging to preconceived ideas. (A big one, according to my stylist friend: I can’t wear that with my body type.) So don’t be afraid to enlist a set—or several—of fresh eyes. It’s a simple way to breathe new life into your wardrobe and see yourself in an entirely different light.

6-Keep editing

Keep a box in your closet and add pieces you don’t (or very rarely) wear when you’re ready to let them go. When it’s full, drop it off at a clothing or shoe donation bin. This approach is far less overwhelming and time-consuming than trying to purge your closet all at once. Think of it as an ongoing process: both your style and your closet will continue to evolve over the years. Personally, I love the feeling after I’ve dropped everything off—the moment I get back in the car and drive away, feeling lighter and finished.

7-Have fun!

Last but not least, investing a little extra time in your style shouldn’t feel like a burden, but like a fun, creative project with you at the center. Relax into the process and enjoy the journey. And remember, the best style of all is the one that truly reflects who you are.

I hope these tips will help you feel more confident, happier—and yes, a little sassier, too.
